Borneo Orangutan Survival Accomplishments

Nyaru Menteng: The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation teamed up with Lone Dröscher-Nielsen to create a sanctuary in Nyaru Menteng on November 4th, 1999, that works nationally and internationally to rescue orangutans from the illegal pet trade. Their main work focuses on saving orangutans that are separated from their mothers, no longer have a home, or are captured illegally, with the goal of re-releasing them back in the wild to re-establish the orangutan population in South East Asia. With over 630 orangutans in their hands at this sanctuary? You said 1.000-plus above, they are continuously successful in propagating and releasing orangutans into the wild equipped with the skills to survive.

Wanariset:

Wanariset was the first program created by Dr. Willie Smits in 1985 that is concerned with the re-introduction of orangutans in their rainforest habitat. It is similar to Nyaru Menteng; however, this program is less focused on rescuing orangutans and more focused on how to properly send them back into the wild. Wanariset is the largest, legally operated orangutan re-introduction project in the world. Funding for this project comes from the government, member fees, corporate and private donations, and the sponsorship of individual orangutans. The cost to save one orangutan is approximately $1,000 U.S. dollars.
