Eco Chic Fashion: Here to Stay
By Victoria Scanlan Stefanakos

The most fashion-forward designers and retailers know that green fashion is here to stay. The fashion industry is changing its practices as consumers demand that their styles be eco-friendly.  Now more than ever, fashionistas like you can care about the planet and your platform stilettos. One of the greatest consumer impacts you can make for the earth is in what you wear. Ecomii’s Eco Chic Guide makes it easy.

The market for cotton alone is staggering.  U.S. textile mills have spun almost 5 million bales of cotton for each of the past 3 years—enough to make more than 1 billion pairs of jeans.  Yet conventional cotton is one of the most chemically dependent crops, drinking up 10 percent of all agricultural chemicals on 3 percent of the world’s farmland. That adds up to 3/4 of a pound of chemicals for every pair of conventionally grown cotton jeans—no matter how well they fit.  Your wardrobe staple is a great place to start; learn more about organic cotton.

The clothes you already own are the greenest ones around; the less stuff we buy means fewer resources are used to make it all.  Love the worn-in, retro look?  So do we:  great vintage and consignment stores are booming. And the hottest new thing?  Designers are repurposing used and sometimes unusual materials and adding a high-fashion twist, creating Recycled Couture. And of course you'll need super-chic sustainable accessories to complement your look.

Still, styles - and waistbands - change. T-shirts fade.  When you buy new, commit to buying items that are well made, durable (natural fibers usually are) and easy-to-maintain with a cold wash and a line-dry. We’ve done all the legwork for you on organic materials and other sustainable fabrics like hemp and soysilk.

Want to look great sweating through Bikram yoga? Don’t sweat what to wear: we’ve got you covered, with the greatest sustainable yoga clothing and the new Spring styles.

Maybe you’re interested in looking deeper than environmental impact to the social responsibility of apparel production.  Feel good about what you wear in fabulous Fair Trade clothing; we tell you what it is and where to find it.

You know what you want, but where do you find it?  In a rapidly growing marketplace, we’ll tell you where to source all this and more online with our top 6 online eco-shopping tips.

You won’t have to look far to find trendy and gorgeous garments, sustainably made from organic and renewable fibers. And both mass marketers and local merchants are selling them. Planet-consciousness is in, and it’s here to stay.  Being green is no fashion sacrifice; you can be an Eco Chic fashion maven.

Read on and you'll discover why wearing green is the new black!
