Be aware that an EPA registration or establishment number on a water filter is not an endorsement of the product. This registration means that the filter uses an agent to slow the growth of microbes within the filter. That’s all.

Recommended models include the following:

  • Culligan model 2300 and Aquasana AQ-4000 are installed under the sink, which provides a larger container through which to filter water and offers the widest range of chemical removal. They were tested extensively by former researchers of the EPA’s Office of Drinking Water.
  • Kenmore 38460 is recommended by Consumer Reports as a Best Buy. This under-sink model is certified to remove small particulates, sediment, and cysts.
  • Omni CBF-20 and Omni 2500 are recommended because of their claim to remove these chemicals and additional pesticides.
  • For water carafes, Consumer Reports recommends Pur Advantage CR-1500R and Brita Classic OB01; both had high ratings for the removal of chloroform and lead.
  • GE SmartWater GXFM03C and the Pur Ultimate Horizontal FM-4700l ranked the best for faucet-mounted models. Both had high scores for the removal of chloroform and lead.
