VOC Paint Facts
By Dr. Alan Greene

  • According to the EPA, 9 percent of the airborne pollutants creating ground-level ozone come from the VOCs in paint.1
  • In sunlight, some paint VOCs can react with nitrous oxide and create smog—we think of it as coming from auto exhausts, but it also comes from oil-based paints.
  • The disposal of conventional paints causes landfill and groundwater contamination, whereas low- and zero-VOC paints are not considered hazardous waste materials.
  • The use of chemical-laden paints year after year causes them to build up on walls and ceilings of homes, which when later demolished, release contaminants into the air, water, and soil.
