Choose Safer Plastic Containers: Understanding the Numbers
By Dr. Alan Greene

Green Wraps and Containers

The chemical components in many plastics can create both health and environmental problems. Switching from plastic to nonplastic or to a safer plastic product can be easy. It won’t be long before your kitchen is free of toxic plastic if you follow these suggestions.
  • Switch from plastic to glass storage containers.
  • Switch from plastic cling wrap to non-PVC cling wrap or waxed paper.
  • Switch from plastic picnic cutlery to Spudware.
  • Switch from plastic to wood cutting boards. I use Epicurean Cutting Surfaces (http://www.epicureancs.com). I find them elegant, easy to clean, and easy on knives. And they are easy on the environment (made from natural wood fiber from certified sustainably managed forests).
  • Switch from beverages sold in plastic bottles to beverages sold in glass bottles.
  • Switch from water bottled in individual plastic bottles to water delivered in large glass coolers.
  • In general, reduce your use of food, water, and beverages sold in cans, plastic containers, and bottles destined for the trash whenever possible. Always try to buy minimally packaged goods. Less packaging saves you money and spares the environment.
  • When it comes to that eternal supermarket question, “Paper or plastic?” you may be surprised to learn that the energy required to produce one paper bag may make plastic a better choice (unless you’re a very determined saver of paper bags)! Plastic requires 600 BTUs; paper, 2500 BTUs.1 But the materials for the plastic bags usually come from a nonrenewable source. Resuable bags are an eco-friendly alternative.
