Non-Hospital Checklist
By Dr. Alan Greene

When looking for a birth center that is not within a hospital itself, ask these questions:

  • Is this a state-licensed facility (if your state gives such licensing)?
  • Is the birth center accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers?
  • Are the birth attendants licensed health care providers?

  • Does the center have an established relationship with local obstetricians who agree to intervene in a medical emergency? If you have your own ob/gyn, will he or she be able to intervene if necessary?
  • What are the arrangements for transportation to a local hospital if necessary?
  • What is their average time “from decision to incision” if a C-section is needed?

  • Does your health insurance cover the cost?
