Say No to Nanoparticles
By Dr. Alan Greene

Beware of nanoparticles, which are being introduced as a rapidly emerging technology. These particles are smaller than a microparticle (one micron equals one thousand nanometers) and are now found in many products, such as commonly used sunscreens. Because of their small size and unique, unpredictable properties, nanoparticles quickly permeate the skin and body tissues and are also difficult to control and remove from the environment. Unless there is a compelling environmental or health benefit to be gained from using a nanoparticle option, it makes green sense to use nano-free personal care products. Our family uses Baby Avalon Natural Sunscreen, a mineral sunscreen without any nanoparticles. You might also try Ecolani, Alba Botanica, or Jason’s Chemical-Free Sunblock.
