Long-Lasting Lightbulbs
By Dr. Alan Greene

Here’s a fun way to help that is profitable for you and for the planet. The Environmental Defense Fund (http://www.environmentaldefense.org) is making it easy for people to find long-lasting light bulbs for their homes.

Using their online tool, enter what type of bulb you are looking for (dimmable, 3-way, recessed can, outdoor, whatever) and up come the results and where to find them. You can use their calculator to find out how much money you’ll save. I’ve already made bulb changes that will over the long run save $1,167.75 on my energy bill and 5,507 pounds of greenhouse CO2 released over the expected life of these bulbs. And I have pledged that whenever a bulb in my home does wear out, I’ll replace it with a renewable one. At the time I am writing this chapter, people have already pledged to replace 204,451 bulbs that will prevent 220,602,629 pounds of CO2 over these bulbs’ lifetimes.
