But whether your refrigerator is conventional or Energy Star, you can make it more green if you do the following:6
- Vacuum the coils on the back of the refrigerator twice a year. This will maximize efficiency, cut down on the electric bill, and reduce consumption of energy.
- Make sure there is space between your refrigerator and the wall behind it, as well as space on either side. This will allow air to circulate around the condenser coils, eliminating the possibility of trapped heat, which increase energy consumption.
- Check the door gasket to be sure there is a tight seal. If cold air is escaping, more energy is required to keep a constantly cold temperature.
- Trade in an old one for a newer model—new, more efficient refrigerators can typically save you $70 to $80 a year by reducing energy consumption. A newer refrigerator can reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by more than a thousand pounds a year.
