For hair care, Greenopia looked at whether the salon used hair coloring that is vegetable-based, low- to ammonia-free, and/or mostly chemical-free. For nail salons, Greenopia checked whether or not the nail polishes used are free of the chemicals described below and whether or not the polish remover used is acetone-free. Greenopia also asked about proper sanitation procedures and the presence of ventilation systems that allow for outdoor air exchange. For both hair and nail salons, Greenopia reviewed the supplies that are used on customers, as well as the grooming products for sale in the salon. The sustainability scores are based on the percentage sold or used that is made with one or more of the following:
all certified organic ingredients, a mix of certified organic ingredients and natural ingredients, and/or all-natural ingredients, or mostly natural ingredients, that do not contain mercury, thimerosal, lead acetate, formaldehyde, nickel, toluene, petroleum distillates, acrylonitrile, ethylacrylate, coal tar, dibutyl phthalate, potassium dichromate, methyl cellosolve.

at least 25% meet the above criteria.

at least 50% meet the above criteria.

at least 75% meet the above criteria.
