Meat used to be a special occasion food, and there are many reasons it still should be. While meat can be part of a healthy diet, it is best consumed in moderation. Eating less meat and more fruits, vegetables and grains reduces your risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. It also curbs greenhouse gas emissions from livestock and slows deforestation. Nearly one third of the earth's land is used for livestock, and over 70% of the Amazon's forests have been turned into pasture. You don't have to go completely vegetarian to take a bite out of the problem, however. Simply go meat-free at lunch or plan a vegetarian dinner once a week. Pledge to be a more infrequent carnivore today.
