These easy-to-grow wildflowers have small, abundant blooms in the summer.
Blue thimble flower (Gilia capitata), with blooms resembling pincushions, grows 3 feet and taller. Bird’s eyes (Gilia tricolor), with pale purplish flowers, grow only to 2 feet. Use any type of gilia in a border or wildflower garden.
In spring, after any danger of frost, sow gilia seeds directly in the ground in full sun. Cool-summer climates are best for gilia. Taller plants may need staking. Don’t let the shallow roots dry out.
