These deep blue flowers are great in bouquets and boutonnieres. The plants, however, are on the homely side. Tall and gawky (up to 36 inches), cornflower is best planted at the back of a border, where lower-growing annuals camouflage it.
Sow seeds in full sun. If you live in a cold-winter climate, plant in early spring. If your winters are mild, plant in fall or early spring. Stake tall varieties.
Remove old flowers to prolong bloom, and when flowering slows down and growth looks ragged, pull out the whole plant.
