Clarkia, or Godetia (Clarkia)
By Bill Marken & The National Gardening Association

Clarkia produces cheerful, abundant, good-for-cutting flowers in cool climates early in the season, when they’re most welcome. Farewell-to-spring (Clarkia amoena) is a favorite type that comes in low- or tall-growing forms and has satiny, 2-inch blooms of mostly red, pink, and white.

Sow clarkia seeds directly in the ground in full sun. Plant in early spring if you live in a cold-winter climate, or in fall if you live in a mild climate, such as its native California.

Clarkia blooms in spring and early summer and doesn’t tolerate hot weather. Plant it in a sunny mixed border or wildflower garden.
