Carnation (Dianthus)
By Bill Marken & The National Gardening Association

Border carnations, bushier and more compact than the cut flowers you see at the florist’s, are easy to grow and have a spicy, clove like fragrance. The flowers of border carnations are typically about 2 inches wide and come mainly in red, pink, and white.

Set out transplants in full sun in springtime, after any danger of frost. Stake taller varieties of this plant. Remove faded flowers to prolong blooming. Most carnations do better in cooler climates, although some varieties are developed for heat resistance.
