Calendula, or Pot Marigold (Calendula Officinalis)
By Bill Marken & The National Gardening Association

Reliable and easy-to-grow, these big (2 to 4 inches across) daisylike flowers, are typically orange or yellow but are also available in cream and white shades.

Use these plants, which grow 12 to 30 inches tall, in containers, in borders, or massed in beds. Calendulas are among the stalwarts of winter-spring gardens in mild climates.

In cold-winter climates, calendulas bloom best in the spring and early summer. Plant transplants in full sun, spaced about 12 inches apart. In cold-winter climates, plant in early spring; in mild-winter climates, plant in the fall.

Calendulas thrive in cool weather. Watch for mildew under less than favorable conditions, and bait for snails and slugs. Remove flowers as soon as they start to fade.
