YOU MAY SEE something called “SugarPlums!” in the markets this year (complete with capital S and P, and exclamation point). California prune growers have discovered a waiting market for “fresh prunes,” as they call them. These are European plum varieties, usually dried into prunes but now being sold as fresh plums. They include French Prune, French d’Agen, Tulare Giant, Sierra Sweet, Sugar Prune, and Moyer Prune varieties, among others. Be aware that SugarPlums! is not a cultivated variety but rather a marketing ploy. That doesn’t diminish the firm sweetness of the plums themselves, but it does indicate the fruit is most likely conventionally grown.
