Kitchen Staple Intro
By Jeff Cox

Every good cook keeps basic staples on hand.  In this helpful guide, we take a look at the most indispensable, multi-purpose cooking ingredients. Some classic examples include flours, oils and wine.  The great news is that all of them are now available in organic forms.

What that means is that today you can find staple ingredients free of insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers and genetic modifications. Not only do they taste better, but they’re better for the planet.  Unlike conventional farming, which depletes the soil, organic farming improves the soil and even builds topsoil through the composting of farm waste.

Not that long ago, it was all but impossible to have this panoply of high-quality, flavor-rich organic ingredients accessible either from a nearby store or by mail order. Today it’s no problem. So the next time someone complains about the state of the world, you could point out that when it comes to eating, we live in the best of times.

Explore our in-depth guides covering everything from bouillons to sweeteners.  In other words, the items you use over and over.  Start greening your staples today.
