Keep an Eye Out for Fair Trade Mangoes
By Jeff Cox

MANY ORGANIC MANGOES  are certified as Fair Trade products by Transfair USA, which insures that the workers and growers involved in producing the food have the right to organize and bargain collectively. It’s important that the farmers we support with our organic food dollars are not exploited but are able to sell their environmentally sound fruit at a price that assures them dignity and a decent standard of living. People wonder why organic produce costs more than conventional when they imagine that organic simply means using fewer agricultural inputs. The answer, of course, is that organics is not about farming cheaply and maximizing profits for corporations. The organic bottom line supports a system of producing food that’s healthy for the environment, fair to the farm workers, profitable for the businesspeople, and safe, wholesome, and tasty for consumers.
