Green home labels include labels for any building and remodeling materials that refer to a “green” product. Because there is no universal definition for the term “green,” it is important to examine the product carefully for certification programs and other independent accreditation authorities. These programs vary among materials, but some examples are the Forest Stewardship Council for lumber, the Energy Star program for appliances and new homes, and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program for new homes and buildings.
