Long known for fuel efficiency, the giant Japanese automaker was quick to establish an advantage in the hybrid market with the Prius. This groundbreaking hybrid has been followed up with several other hybrid models under both the Toyota and Lexus brands.
Toyota has also incorporated environmental sustainability into its operations with the Think Green! program. By January of 2007 Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) USA headquarters in Los Angeles had achieved zero waste to landfills, with 80% of waste being recycled and the remainder burned to generate electricity.
While Toyota is already experiencing success with its hybrid fleet, the company also has its attention on the green cars of tomorrow: Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and hydrogen vehicles.
Toyota is looking to leverage its hybrid technology to produce PHEVs as early as 2010, but is only going to sell "hundreds" of PHEVs that year. Hydrogen vehicle technology is still a long way off, but like the other major automakers Toyota is working to make it a feasible transportation option as soon as possible.
Toyota publishes an annual environmental report with details about all of their green programs.
