General Motors appears to be working to remake itself as an environmentally conscious automaker. The company has focused much of its marketing efforts on its environmental credentials, especially the highly anticipated Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

PHEVs are expected to be the next breakthrough technology in the auto industry, and GM hopes to lead the charge by making the Volt the symbolic PHEV just as the Toyota Prius has been for hybrids.

GM is emphasizing a holistic view towards environmentally sustainable driving, embracing a wide spectrum of green technologies: fuel efficiency, biofuels, hybrids, electric vehicles and PHEVs, and hydrogen fuel cell cars.

GM has also been working to improve the environmental sustainability of its facilities.

The next few years will be crucial for GM. The company is on the ropes; to regain its position as the symbol of American manufacturing GM will need to bounce back and fight hard.

GM's commitment to environmental sustainability is a step in the right direction. Now for the hard part: delivering innovative models that meet customers' needs and capture their imaginations.
