Ford has its hands in the major green car areas: fuel efficiency, hybrids, ethanol, clean diesel, and hydrogen fuel cells. The American carmaker has taken a practical approach towards environmental sustainability.
Less attention has been paid to creating hot new green models, and more to green manufacturing and incremental changes. Ford is focused on improving the efficiency and performance of current technologies, while cautiously wading into new technologies with break-through potential.
Ford's Dagenham plant is an example of the carmaker's environmental initiatives.
Wind turbines power the facility and environmental efficiency was a high priority in designing and building the plant. Lower energy demand and recycled building materials were incorporated to help Ford's bottom line as well as the environment. Water conservation has also been an important cause at Ford.
Ford's environmental sustainability efforts are combined under the Greener Miles initiative. This initiative includes a blueprint for Ford's short-term, medium-term, and long-term green plans.
The plan takes a relatively conservative approach towards green driving, stressing practical, incremental improvements in the short-term and far off promises of electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells.
