Protect Your Garden with Mulch or Environmental Alternatives
By Eric Corey Freed

Mulch is a protective cover used in gardening. Because it covers the ground, it blocks the sun, keeps the soil moist, prevents erosion, and prevents weeds from growing. Some environmentally friendly mulch alternatives include

  • Compost: Collect the food scraps from your kitchen and place them into a large pile in your backyard. Over time, the food breaks down into a rich soil, called compost.
  • Leaves: Rake up the fallen leaves and spread them around the base of your plants to feed and protect the soil.
  • Wood chips: Place wood chips around the base of your plants to create an attractive mulch. You can find these at any lumber yard, but ask for reclaimed wood.
  • Nutshells: Used nutshells are a natural, alternative mulch. Find some at your local farmers’ market, grocery store, or garden shop.
