Microhydropower (Mini Dams)
By Eric Corey Freed

Solar power has sleek, shiny panels, and wind power has futuristic propellers, but microhydropower may remind you of muddy shoes and damp clothes. Microhydropower is a small generator powered by the force of running water.

If you have a flowing river or creek on your property, you may want to consider adding a microhydro energy system. Like a dam, only much smaller, microhydro power produces electricity from water turning a small turbine. Because the entire system sits below the water, microhydropower doesn’t create the same environmental issues as a large dam does.

If you have flowing water on your property, microhydropower might give you the most power for the least amount of upfront cost. The cost of a microhydro system starts as low as $5,000.
