Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: Health Hazards From Traditional Finishes
By Eric Corey Freed

Thousands of people live with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). Generally speaking, MCS is an unusually severe sensitivity to chemicals, including VOCs. Like allergies, people with MCS suffer from:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Itching
  • Lack of concentration
  • Memory problems
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Nausea
  • Rashes
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat

But unlike simple allergies, these reactions are caused from exposure to the countless chemicals in homes, cars, and offices.

Many doctors don’t recognize MCS as a true disorder, but those who have been diagnosed with it will attest to its effects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that about one-third of people working in sealed buildings are chemically sensitive.

Diagnosing and treating MCS is difficult because it’s the combination of all these chemical exposures and not a single product causing the symptoms. Treatment requires removing all these chemicals from your home and living a truly nontoxic life.
