Identifying Green Product Certifications
By Eric Corey Freed

Several green certification systems have developed over the years, but only a handful have become accepted and recognized. Although some of the following certifications apply to only one product, you can consider this a comprehensive list of the various certifications available:

  • Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label Plus: Green Label Plus is an independent testing program that identifies carpets with very low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For more information: http://www.carpet-rug.org .
  • Cradle to Cradle Certification (C2C): Cradle to Cradle Certification is a rigorous evaluation of the sustainability and health of specific building products. The seal certifies the use of environmentally safe materials; design for reuse; the use of renewable energy; and reduction of pollution caused by the manufacturing process. For more information: http://www.mbdc.com .
  • Energy Star: Energy Star energy efficiency guidelines are set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Energy Star guidelines exist for many residential building products, including appliances, heating and cooling systems, lighting, roof products, and windows and doors. For more information: http://www.energystar.gov .
  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC): The FSC is an independent, not-for-profit, nongovernment organization. It sets standards that reflect agreed-upon principles for responsible forest management, and accredits organizations that certify the achievement of those standards by specific forests or woodlands. For more information: http://www.fsc.org .
  • GREENGUARD: The GREENGUARD Certification Program is an independent, third-party testing program for low-emitting products and materials. GREENGUARD has developed standards for adhesives, appliances, ceiling, flooring, insulation, paint, and wall-covering products. For more information: http://www.greenguard.org .
  • Green Seal: Green Seal is an independent, nonprofit organization that sets standards for environmentally preferable products, conducts product evaluations, and certifies products meeting those standards.  ....read more
