Finding Green Professionals

Several sources for finding green professionals exist. The issue isn’t where to find information, but which information to trust and use.

Countless local green business programs are emerging every day. The popularity of green building is quickly growing in popularity among consumers, creating the demand for green directories. In Northern California, for example, the Association of Bay Area Governments coordinates its Certified Green Business Program (http://www.greenbiz.ca.gov). As of this writing, over 700 businesses across the seven Bay Area counties have passed the requirements needed to be a green business. EnviroStars (http://www.envirostars.com) is similar to the California program and handles the Puget Sound region in Washington. Participation in these programs is voluntary and free.

Several noncertified directories of green businesses exist as well, and the following are worth looking into:

    Remember: Listing in the preceding sites is free or available to anyone for a nominal fee, so be sure to confirm the green credentials and qualifications of these companies for yourself.

Technical Stuff: The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) offers a professional accreditation for those trained in the LEED Rating System (see the next section for more on LEED). To become accredited, a building professional needs to pass the exam (which is on the LEED system, not on green building). Those who pass are awarded a LEED Accredited Professional Certificate.
