The San Francisco Green Film Festival

Next week from March 1–7, the San Francisco Green Film Festival kicks off its second season with a new crop of eco-friendly entertainment. The lineup promises to be a mix of amusing, thought-provoking and inspiring events, appropriate for the die-hard green warrior and the casual kitchen composter alike.

As the Bay Area’s only green festival dedicated to films and new forms of media, the San Francisco Green Film Festival is a weeklong exploration of green issues and sustainable living.

This year’s films include local premieres of 40 films from around the globe, with 50 visiting filmmakers and guest speakers. The festival will also feature special events, parties, panels and educational programs, inviting festival attendees to get involved and take action with environmental causes important to them. This year’s festival will take place at the San Francisco Film Society Cinema, located at 1746 Post Street in San Francisco.

On opening night, attendees can enjoy the “The Island President,” a new film by Bay Area resident Jon Shenk. Shenk chronicles the year he spent with President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives as he confronted a problem no other world leader has ever faced: the literal survival of his country and everyone in it, due to the devastating impacts of climate change. Witness the first chapter of his global environmental fight, a fight that, following his forced resignation on February 7th, has clearly only just begun.

After the film, attend an opening night reception with food and beverages and live entertainment.

Highlights of the 2nd Annual San Francisco Green Film Festival include:

  • San Francisco Premieres of Bay Area filmmaker Jon Shenk’s “The Island President”
  • Anthony Baxter’s “You’ve Been Trumped”
  • San Francisco premiere of a short film by Summer Rayne Oakes, who is billed as the world’s top eco-model.
  • World Premiere of Mary Liz Thomson & Darryl Cherney’s “Who Bombed Judi Bari?”
  • Sneak Preview of Emily James’s “Just Do It: A Tale of Modern-Day Outlaws”
  • Launch of “Lights! Camera! Action Steps!” which links festival attendees who’d like to get involved with leaders in local environmental causes

There are green events going on all over the country this month. Make November ultra-eco by attending one in your area:

Austin, Texas: If you live in or near the Austin area, then you have a lot more to be excited about than amazing music and cheap state beer, but you probably already know that.

Vancouver is playing host to Canada’s first ever Eco Fashion Week, Sept. 27-30, and not only will this event showcase some drop-dead gorgeous eco friendly fashions, but the event will also be entirely plastic-bottle free.

So how will guests stay hydrated? By drinking from the official SIGG bottle, co-designed by none other than Gisele Bündchen, of course. Each guest will receive the limited edition official SIGG bottle, which Gisele co-designed exclusively for Eco Fashion Week in her role as the Goodwill Environmental Ambassador.

Partnering with SIGG Canada, Eco Fashion Week will promote environmentally conscious fashion trends, while also supporting and applauding designers, manufacturers, and retailers who are shaping these trends.

For more information, check out Canada’s inaugural Eco Fashion Week check it out, this Sept. 27-30.

Pretty in Green

Attention green fashionistas, the world is becoming a much prettier and — thank goodness – a more conscientious domain. Proof of the wind change will abound this coming week, in the form of The GreenShows.

Now a New York Fashion Week resident, The GreenShows will embark on its third season, showcasing beautiful designs by eco-friendly designers, September 12-14.

The GreenShow’s mission statement explains it best: “The GreenShows is the premiere fashion event exclusively committed to eco-friendly, ethically sound, fair-trade fashion during New York Fashion Week.”

And these designers are nothing short of amazing. From my favorite vegan line, Vaute Couture, to newbie (okay, just new for me) JoAnn Berman, whose dresses I could kill for. And for my days of philanthropic jet setting followed by sunset drinks, I’ve got EKO-LAB to keep me looking like the most perfect bohemian daughter-of-a-rock star ever.

Check out this video by our friends at Ecouterre.com, where you can see the clothes in action, and listen to the genius designers give a run-down of their genius designs.

The GreenShows happen Sept. 12-14 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City. For more information on GreenShow events, click here.
