Evict Your White Load

File under: Cleaning

white loadPiled in a basket by my door, bound for the thrift store, sits an armload of clothing I’ve decided I don’t need anymore. Everyone has their reasons for giving up on clothing, but mine has both a practical and environmental motive.

When I did a recent purge of unused items, I realized that I was not wearing my white socks anymore. When it’s warm I wear sandals, and when it’s cool I wear pants and shoes. I’ve been favoring dark socks more and more these days, so the white socks got the shove.

Then it dawned on me - I haven’t been wearing my white shirts either. They are too hard to keep spot free, and the war against yellow no longer seems worth the effort. I had shunned white underwear ages ago.

Then I started looking around. I had white kitchen towels that were constantly being washed and bleached, because every wipe seemed to bring another stain. Then I remembered that one set of white bedsheets and pillow cases that I’ve avoided using for years.

So I’ll make my life easier by eliminating the fastidious care these white items require, and I’ll eliminate some energy and toxicity footprint from my life. Many detergents and bleaches can be used in cool water, but I was still inclined to do a hot load for the whites alone, since I could see the difference. I had always used the bleach sparingly, but over time I’ve used innumerable gallons. And besides, it was just another thing I had to buy and store in my apartment.

Later this week, I’ll be going to the thrift store, whites in tow, and I’ll return with some colorful towels, sheets and clothing, and I’ll be better off on all counts.
