Go Green and Avoid Seeing Red

When my quest for the perfect eco-friendly mascara finally came to an end – thank you Josie Maran – I began what would be my biggest challenge to date: finding a natural sunscreen that actually works.

Let me start by saying that I am a white girl. Not just white, white-white. This body was not designed for sun worship, and it erupts in an angry-looking sunburn with minimal exposure. That said, I spent the better part of college lying in a tanning bed, trying to achieve a modicum of tan. What I succeeded in doing was damaging my skin, which is why now I take my sunscreen seriously.

The problem with conventional sunscreens is that they are full of nasty chemicals that seep into your body through your pores. But unlike cosmetics, which are (arguably) optional, using sunscreen prevents skin cancers, so for many years it was choosing the lesser of two evils.

Many of the conventional brands, like Coppertone and Banana Boat, contain chemicals like oxybenzone, which is easily absorbed into the skin and which has been linked to certain cancers, neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption. (A fantastic resource for finding out the purity of your favorite brand is Skin Deep, a project of the Environmental Working Group, which has extensively studied the ingredients in cosmetics, sunscreens and other personal care products.)

More than one million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. every year and since I’d like to protect my skin and yours, I have tested every natural sunscreen I could get my hands on. Here are my favorites:

  • Miessence Organics Reflect Outdoor Balm: This zinc-based sunscreen is a winner in the healthy sunscreen category. It smooths on without a trace of whiteness, thanks to added minerals designed to reflect ultraviolet rays. In fact, the sheen the sunscreen added to my skin made me look dewy and fresh, instead of white and scary like many of the others I tried. However, with a relatively low SPF of 15 and no indication that the sunscreen is water resistant, I wouldn’t recommend this for kids. A 3.5-ounce bottle retails for $27.
  • Badger SPF 30: This sunscreen ranked among the purest available on the market. It offers broad UVA and UVB protection and is very water resistant. And with essential oils of lavender, sweet orange and ylang ylang, it smells yummy too. A 2.9-ounce bottle retails for $16.
  • Elemental Herbs Sunscreen Sport: I love all of the products this company makes but of the sunscreens, the SPF 22 Tinted sunscreen is my favorite. The lotion goes on smoothly and doesn’t leave that ghostly sheen the other zinc sunscreens leave behind. The sunscreen is organic and biodegradable. A 1-ounce tube retails for $9.
  • Mustela Sun Lotion Bebe: This SPF 50 lotion is fantastic. It manages to be pure – titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the only ingredients – while offering super high protection. It does go on a little bit white, but for when I am in strong sun and need a lot of protection this one is a winner. A 1.6-ounce tube retails for $15.
  • Little Twig Mineral Sunscreen: This little company’s newest product is paraben- and mineral oil-free and offers broad-spectrum SPF 30 protection. While it looks super-white in the tube, it spreads easily and absorbs quickly. The sunscreen is unscented and water-resistant, so it is perfect for little beach bodies. A 2.9-ounce tube retails for $21.
