Father’s Day is around the corner, do you have your gift ready? I’ve always thought that father-figures are much harder to shop for than mothers. Many mothers are made happy with little extravagances like flowers, chocolate, spa days, yoga gear, etc.
But when it comes to my dad, I’m stumped. He golfs and that’s it. I’ve gotten him every annoying golf accessory and gadget that ever existed and he hasn’t used one of them (not that I blame him). It’s time to think outside the box; so here you go, my top five green gift ideas for Father’s Day:
Of course, the gift of time is always appreciated by fathers. And nothing is greener than spending time together outside hiking or taking a walk. Is your father a photography enthusiast? Walk around your town or a nature reserve and take photos of whatever crosses your path. Frame the best ones for your father to remember your day together.
Organic Beer or Wine Club. If your dad likes a cold one now and then or is one to talk of the nutty notes of his favorite wine, this is the best gift. Beer or wine of the month clubs typically cost around $30/month and your father will get a 12-pack or bottle or organic goodness. He will enjoy this monthly treat and think of how loving his offspring is. You can keep your subscription for as long as you like: one month, three months, a year.
“Manly gadgets.” Does your dad revel in power tools and gadgetry? Yes, it’s a cliché, but there are fathers in our lives that love tools. Check out quazen for the best in eco-friendly tools, from an electric mower to a solar-powered watch.
Green movies and books. I gave my dad the Planet Earth series on DVD for Christmas this year and it was a hit. It’s about $40 and is something he can watch over and over, especially in HD. There are too many green-themed books to list, hit up Amazon to cater a book to your dad’s interests. If he has a long commute or is a slow reader, consider buying the book on audio CDs. Find a book that suits your father’s political beliefs and lifestyle.
Miscellaneous trinkets and tools. For a hodgepodge of green gift ideas, check out worldofgood.ebay.com, which has a huge variety with a varying price-range. The vintage pool ball wine stoppers would go well with a wine of the month club. For the gardener (or energy saver), there’s a water conservation kit which insures hose efficiency.
Don’t stress, have a great time with the father-figure in your life. Happy Father’s Day!
