Auto Bailout Done

Well, it finally happened.  Automakers finally got their bailout, excuse me … loan.  After sitting on the fence for far longer than they should have, the Bush Administration took action late last week to stave off bankruptcy for two of the nation’s leading automotive manufactures by appropriating $17.4 billion to GM and Chrysler.  The plan would provide the two companies with $13.4 billion immediately, but would require that they show proof of fiscal viability by the end of March; something many experts believe will be near impossible to do.  This money will not be new funding, but rather will be appropriated from the first $350 billion of the $700 billion passed by Congress a few months ago to aid the financial industry.  GM would have access to an additional $4 billion, assuming they prove they can be a viable company, out of the next allocation of $350 billion.

Salazar a curious pick for Secretary of the Interior

The democratic Senator from Colorado, Ken Salazar, has been tapped to be our new Secretary of the Interior.  While not an environmentalist by any stretch, Salazar has done an excellent job mediating tensions between energy development interests and land conservation in his home state.  He’s been a strong advocate for hunters and outdoorsman, but he’s also been supportive of energy exploration and development on public lands.  In short, he’s the definition of a centrist; perhaps even a little right of center.

New Jersey’s Lisa Jackson to head EPA

What is the deal with EPA Directors being from New Jersey?  Is it a prerequisite or something?  We had Christie Todd Whitman (what a nightmare), and now we have Lisa Jackson.  Both were former heads of the New Jersey EPA, and while I would never compare Jackson’s record to Whitman’s, it’s clear that many New Jersey environmental groups regard her as being too lenient on polluters.  Having lived in and worked on environmental issues in New Jersey, let me say that when it comes to issues like climate change the State of New Jersey has its act together, but when it comes to issues like toxics, New Jersey is the poster child for ineptitude.  New Jersey has way too many untreated superfund sites, and many feel not enough was done to fix the problem under Jackson’s watch.

Lisa Jackson is currently the Chief of Staff for Governor John Corzine, and has held almost every position of note in the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.  Her career speaks to a lifetime of work on environmental issues, and while the State of New Jersey has made some good progress in that regard, it’s not a place where ecological sensitivity trumps industry, nor has it ever been.  Perhaps you’ve heard the jokes about New Jersey’s toxic reputation.  Unfortunately, I can’t say that they are unwarranted. …read more of New Jersey’s Lisa Jackson to head EPA here

Dr. Steven Chu to be new Secretary of Energy

Dr. Steven Chu to be new Secretary of Energy

UC Berkeley professor and Nobel Prize winner, Steven Chu, appears to be President-elect Obama’s choice for Secretary of Energy.  This should be good news for all who are looking for a change in Energy policy from cheerleader for the fossil fuels industry to pioneer for the renewable energy industry.  In Chu, Obama has chosen a champion for renewable energy.  Chu heads up the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and is aggressively spearheading the development of a wide array of renewable energy technologies and bio-fuels.  In 1997 Chu won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on laser cooling and trapping atoms.

The fact that Chu is not a politician is indeed a refreshing break from the status quo of past Energy Secretaries.   Chu is known for his bold, creative approach of using science to solve important problems and he will no doubt need to continue in that manner as he seeks to put the United States on a path towards energy independence.  The appointment of Dr. Chu signifies that Obama wants someone who intimately understands the science and technology behind energy policy more than the politics.  It appears that the plan is to let scientific and technological development create the substance of our new energy policy, and let the politics follow.  This is indeed a great victory for all environmentalists and …read more of Dr. Steven Chu to be new Secretary of Energy here
