Searching for Sustainable School Supplies

As mom to a high schooler and a fourth grader, I am now a veteran school supply shopper. Fortunately, buying eco-friendly school products for my kids has only become easier in recent years. Earth-friendly products can now be found everywhere from convenience stores to big box stores, as long as you keep an eye out.

Here are some cool and widely available eco-friendly school supplies to look for this season.

: Paper Mate’s Earthwrite pencil looks like your basic pencil except that it’s made from 100% recycled wood. Green Toy Safety Backfire?

The mad rush for holiday toy shopping is on. This can be tricky territory for the health and eco-conscious parent. And now a new law designed to improve toy safety may end up reducing eco-friendly toy choices.

The Scoop

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) sets mandatory safety standards for toys, clothes, and other items used by kids 12 years and younger. Toy manufacturers will have to test their toys to prove they are safe.

Birthday Parties A La Green!

Green Stress Relief—Family Style

Without a doubt times are difficult. Stress levels are up among parents in many households and that percolates down to the kids eventually.  One easy green way I’ve found to diffuse anxieties within my family unit, at least temporarily, is to get the whole gang outside.

I know this strategy works for me as I’m a long time walker, lucky enough to live in a forested rural area with babbling streams criss-crossing the road. I’ve walked dogs, kids, and sometimes dogs and kids together for years. Getting outdoors and opening my senses to the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations takes my mind off any worries and is like balm to my spirit.
