Earth Day 101

We’ve been enjoying life on earth for a while now. Given our growing impact, it’s been but a blink since we devoted one day to reminding us to cherish and protect it every day. Earth Day was born in 1970. Now, imagine the world we can leave our little ones if we teach them what it means.

There are countless simple ways to dive in. For all children, “doing” will stay with them far longer than “learning.” That’s especially true for young ones, for whom the idea of a threatened planet and dwindling life-giving resources may be overwhelming, at best, and frightening, at its worst. Instead, focus on what good they can do.

Then, just DO something green: Drop off donations at a community center or food pantry, plant trees or garden in your town, even clean up your local beach.

Your family will feel inspired by their purposeful work, and they’ll learn by osmosis that Mother Earth feels good when we treat her with love.

Even older children, who are eager to understand how things work and where they fit in the process, dig any earth-friendly activity that resonates with your family.
Ride your bikes to the market, cook a locally grown meal, hang your clothes on the line to let the sun work its warm magic. Or, challenge them to a Good Earth Habit:

  • Brush their teeth without the company of running water. (Use a cupful; it’s like camping!)
  • Time themselves to trim their showering time down to five minutes or less. Allow for more if they like to play in the dirt.
  • Turn off lights every time they leave a room. (It’s true: Neither money nor electricity grow on trees.)

Go ahead, and explain why these habits are worth building. See if they can keep up the green goodness for an entire week, or month—or more.

The message will take root if you make sure to inspire your family with a trip to a beautiful natural setting. Mountaintops and lapping waves always fill me with peace and tranquility—when I’m not chasing kiddos. Slowing down is my cue to take heart.

I plan to close the day with a little personal inspiration, too. “To Live Simply” by William Henry Channing (1810-1884) says it all.
“To live content with small means, to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich;
 To study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never; To let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony.”

That is music to my ears. I’m off to listen to the stars, with babes in tow. Happy Earth Day to you all.

    That is a truly an inspirational passage. Since my kids don’t always listen to me, I try to read them passages that may resonate with them so I’ll be sure to include this one. I don’t know how much gets through, but they seem to enjoy them.
