Green Stress Relief—Family Style

Without a doubt times are difficult. Stress levels are up among parents in many households and that percolates down to the kids eventually.  One easy green way I’ve found to diffuse anxieties within my family unit, at least temporarily, is to get the whole gang outside.

I know this strategy works for me as I’m a long time walker, lucky enough to live in a forested rural area with babbling streams criss-crossing the road. I’ve walked dogs, kids, and sometimes dogs and kids together for years. Getting outdoors and opening my senses to the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations takes my mind off any worries and is like balm to my spirit.

Sometimes I play a game with my kids to get them to really “see” and appreciate their natural surroundings. When we’re outside on the move I ask them to each find one amazing thing. They always do, without fail. Whether it’s a turkey vulture gliding overhead, a delicate snowflake, or a red fox emblazoned against the white landscape, we find special bits of nature. On a recent walk my 7-year-old daughter asked me, “Can we find 10 amazing things?” You bet we did.

Even if your kids are too young or too old to play such a game, letting them loose to run around, be with each other, and just breathe in some fresh air should allow everyone to let off steam. True, connecting with nature isn’t going to solve your problems but it may be a calming (and free) diversion that helps bring your family a little bit closer.

A wonderful and simple game to illustrate the beauty of nature to our future generations.

Let me start off by saying that this is such a cute idea! It’s great to be able to take a step back and appreciate the simpler things in life. A lot of families are feeling overwhelmed with the stress of a bad economy in a fast paced world, and an imbalance between their work life and home life. Unfortunately, as stress increases people tend to make less and less time available for lazy lollygags through nature when in fact that’s exactly what their mind, bodies and souls are craving.
I’d like to tell you about the family whose three boys I take care of here in Costa Rica. The Jacobus’ were getting sick and tired of their busy, schedule driven lives and made the decision to sell everything and move to Costa Rica. Their main goal was to raise their children in an environment that put a strong emphasis on experiences with the natural world. It’s been nearly four years and the whole family is still confident in the decision they made.
In addition to their regular schooling, these boys have learned invaluable lessons about nature by DOING first hand. Their mother, Maggie, created a website called Super Natural Adventures, (www.supernaturaladventures.com) that features the exotic adventures of the three boys while out exploring the amazing ecology here in Costa Rica. They have videos about everything from green iguanas to the origins of chocolate, and host of other exciting topics in between.
The best part of the website for me is that the boys are extremely environmentally conscious and always explain the importance of protecting our natural world. Furthermore, they ask their viewers to head outside, figure out what makes the nature special in their own neighborhood, and share that information by making a video to post on their site.
The point is, life will often get hectic and stressful, but our beautiful planet earth will always be right outside the door to offer some relaxation and relief.
