Great Sources for Natural Toys

Ask your parents, and they’ll no doubt tell you that your favorite toy during your first holidays at home were the boxes strewn across the room after the melee of Christmas morning had cleared. Your young children are no different. Bells, whistles and (gasp!) batteries, even, needn’t ruin your homespun holiday. Instead, think: Simple. Natural. Heirlooms. They’ll be around long after you’ve recycled the boxes.

I have two young boys, and I’ve been sourcing the best outlets for great natural toys, tools and gear for the past five years. Lately, I’m enamored with Etsy, the online home of artisans who sell their well-priced handmade wares directly to you (just search for what you seek).

Below, though, is my tried-and-true toy team, the group whose catalogs I send to the grandparents to spark their imaginations. They’re all independently or family-run businesses that believe deeply in simple living, parenting and play. Visit them often, and tell them I sent you.

Visit Three Sisters Toys for a good explanation of how simple, open-ended toys foster imagination and well-rounded children (by the social worker who owns the company.) Then shop for a fine selection of fun, all shipped for the flat rate of $5.

Magic Cabin is a perennial favorite, and it breaks down its vast offerings in an-easy-to-use gift center page, with categories like “active kids,” young artists, and it even sorts products by price. Look for age-appropriate suggestions, too, if you’re shopping for kids 9 and up.

Rosie Hippo carries earth-friendly, handcrafted toys of all kinds, from all over the world. Search by country of origin to find a watercolor set from Italy or a bamboo flute from Bali.

Oompa Toys has staked its natural and organic toy flag in Europe, where brands like Plan Toys, Haba and Selecta were born. Their lovable motto? “No Batteries. No Blinking Lights. No Cartoon-Themed Toys. Period.” And they offer free shipping for orders over $65.

The Wooden Wagon may be my favorite source of all for naturally inspired wooden gear from Germany and America. Countless charming, handmade, folk-art decorations, games and puzzles, plus wonderful toys make it a one-stop shop for my inner child.

Palumba is the online home for a collective of organic, green-built, handmade toys, art supplies and musical items made from all-natural materials—down to the beeswax finishes. Their wooden play kitchen is so beautiful, it’s my favorite piece of furniture in my, um, living room.

The Vermont-based Nova Natural is the granddaddy of gorgeous wooden toys, crafts, art supplies and organic woolens for all-natural families. Their printed catalog will make the crunchy grandparents of creative kids everywhere swoon.
