Most people pay attention to their eyes only when they have a problem. Yet the many hours we spend watching TV and working at the computer can take a toll on eye health.

According to Ayurveda, the eyes are one of the most important organs of the body. All five elements play a role in maintaining eye health. Earth (prithivi) governs the muscular part of the eye, fire (tejas) rules the blood vessels, air (vayu) governs the color, water (apu) dominates the white area, and space (akasha) controls the tear ducts and channels.

Healthy Eye Habits

Never stare continuously at fixed objects in the distance. Blink periodically and look away at short intervals to prevent eye strain. Staring at the TV up close is one of the main causes of myopia (near-sightedness). Watch TV from at least ten feet away. …read more of Ayurvedic Eye Care here

Prostate health can be a serious issue for men in middle age. Half of men in their sixties and up to 90 percent of men in their seventies and eighties are found to have enlarged prostates in America.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in men, with about 80 percent of all cases occurring in men over sixty-five.

Even though the prostate seems to be an older man’s health issue, these imbalances begin much earlier in life. The good news is that following an appropriate diet and taking appropriate herbal supplements can help keep the prostate healthy and functioning well.  …read more of Men’s Health – An Ayurvedic Perspective here

Even though we may begin the day with a charge of energy, around two or three o’clock in the afternoon we may feel as though we are running out of steam.

Mid-afternoon is often a time when we feel like we need a little boost of energy to get us through the rest of the day.

Instead of reaching for a candy bar or salty snack, Ayurveda has a better solution. One that is not only good for you, but delicious as well!

Almond Energy is an energizing herbal almond beverage mix made from an original ayurvedic recipe in an easy to use blend of blanched almonds, rare herbs and raw sugar.  I like to call it my ayurvedic protein powder! …read more of Boost Your Energy the Ayurveda Way! here

6 Ayurvedic Tips to Boost Brain Health

According to Ayurveda, there are three equally important aspects to mental performance.

The first is ‘dhi’, learning and comprehension, governed by Vata dosha,  the second is ‘dhriti’, processing and retention of knowledge, the realm of Pitta dosha and ‘smriti’, memory or recall controlled by Kapha dosha.

For the best mental performance and realization each of these factors needs to be at its peak and more importantly, the coordination among the three factors needs to be optimal.

Ayurveda recommends we pay attention to the fundamental pillars of good health, diet, sleep and lifestyle to achieve this state of mental wholeness and balance.

Tips to help boost brainpower

1. Eat pure, ‘intelligent’ foods
Ayurveda says it is very important to eat foods that are natural and pure for the full benefit to be absorbed.

When foods are as close to their natural state as possible, they deliver the most potent nutrition. Foods that have been genetically altered, processed or refined have much of their natural intelligence stripped from them. …read more of 6 Ayurvedic Tips to Boost Brain Health here

How can you make sure your child is getting the most out of hours spent in school? One way is to enhance learning ability with the natural techniques of Ayurveda.

Ayurvedic texts describe three aspects of mental ability:
dhi – The power of acquisition or learning
dhriti – The power of retention
smriti – The ability to recall

When these three mental functions are not in balance, either individually or in their coordination with one another learning problems can crop up.

Children who have learning problems often feel like failures in school, which leads to frustration and low self-esteem.

When these three aspects are coordinated the child’s memory is quick and bright. If impurities (ama) are obstructing the channels of communication between these three functions, learning problems as well as behavioral problems can develop.

The high incidence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the U.S. is a prime example of learning/behavioral issues for millions of children. …read more of Back to School with Ayurveda here
