We cannot take for granted the importance of keeping our food supply free from contamination, particularly in light of the recent outbreak of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli, or E. coli O104:H4 in Europe.

The list of suspected contaminants continues to unfold, including Spanish cucumbers, German lettuce, tomatoes and most recently sprouts.

Radish sprouts were the source in a Japanese E. coli occurrence in 1996. Cuts and scrapes: Clean wound with cold water and mild soap. Apply crushed yarrow leaves or flowers to the injury to stop bleeding. An ice pack can help bring down swelling and reduce pain.
