Although the economy is said to be getting better, most of us are still in savings mode.  With winter approaching and 40% of our energy costs going to heating our homes, the best thing you can do to save money and energy is to ensure that the heat stays there.  And with 80% of homes built before 1980 not sufficiently insulated (According to the Department of Energy), chances are you can you save a bit of money this winter.

The good news is that you don’t have to tear apart your walls to add extra insulation.  In fact, the greatest bang for your buck is by insulating exterior walls.

Here are 7 areas to start insulating to prevent heat loss:

1. Outlets and Switch Plates on exterior walls:

2. Dryer Vent

3. Water Spout

  • Use natural caulk, or foam around the exterior – if you can see gaps or cracks, it can be fitted with insulation.

4. Recessed Lighting

  • Natural caulk, foam, loose or fiber insulation can be used here to stop unwanted heat loss. Remember that foam insulation expands as it dries, so make sure you use less than you need. If need be, you can always go back to add more.
  • Make sure you use a fire rated product when placing around wires and high heat areas.

5. Lighting Boxes

  • Recessed light fixtures can be a major source of heat loss. Make sure you do not place insulation near or touching a fixture unless it is marked IC (designed for direct insulation contact)

6. Fireplace

  • Seal out the side edge where the interior wall meets stone or fireplace material.
  • Steel wool, natural foam or caulk can be used here.

7. Windows

  • Seal edges around outer frame, and any gaps between the panes of glass.
  • Paintable or clear caulk is the easiest for me, but you can also use caulking rolls too.

ADVANCED TIP: Remove moldings and spray foam in and around the frame inside the walls, then replace the moldings. Another advantage is this can increase windowsill depth to give you enough room for indoor plants.

To stop unwanted pests, you can stuff steel wool into areas where rodents may travel. This will keep them from chewing through the insulation. Mice travel in all areas of the wall, so add steel wool to water pipes, electrical boxes, etc.
