My love of small spaces is not just a romantic fantasy; I live in one. My studio condo is 525 square feet. I have a tiny kitchen, decent bathroom, walk-thru closet and one big room with floor to ceiling windows on one wall.
It’s perfect for one and can occasionally accommodate four for dinner. “Sounds fine” you say, “but why do you LOVE it so?” Keep reading.
Save time
A small place can save you a ton of time in cleaning and repair. I can tidy up my space in about ten minutes and do a full top-to-bottom clean in under an hour. I can vacuum the whole place without switching to another outlet! Imagine being able to paint your entire apartment in a day—I can.
Save money
Whether you’re renting or buying, a small space is generally cheaper than a larger one. In my building, a one bedroom runs about $350 more a month than a studio. That’s $4,200 a year! Plus, utilities and maintenance should be less, too!
In addition, my tiny place keeps consumerism in check. How? If I want buy anything bigger than a breadbox, I have to purge a piece of furniture. I don’t have endless rooms/closets/basements/garages to hide my junk. If you’re the type that expands to fill your space, a small place can help you control the urge to shop/collect and thus save you money.
Live better
One reason I live in a small place is it gave me the opportunity to live in a better neighborhood. I bought less space and more location. So, I live in a really convenient area—two blocks from my coffee shop, library and grocery store. And, I can walk to work—just five blocks away. It’s so convenient that I was able to dump my gas-guzzling car—saving me even more.
So, I save time, save money and save the environment. What’s not to love?

Amen. When I was in NYC I was always thought I wanted more space. When I got, I longed for the simple and clean way of live that my apt required of me.
I just purchased a one-bedroom in Brooklyn, and love the fact it only takes me less than 45 minutes to clean my entire apartment!
I think myself, and all the other readers in New York City can say that reading your post makes me feel alot better about my apartment. I have to say, 600 square feet does me just fine.
We live in a small house with lots o’ stuff and I only wish we had more light and higher ceilings.
We live in a 36 ft fifth-wheel RV. With the two slides, we have a whopping 300 square feet. Enough space, well laid out, with great storage. It isn’t a real new unit, so the windows and insulation aren’t real efficient, but it suits us fine. As a semi-retired couple, it also fits our financial situation to a tee.
